FAQs and Troubleshooting

Find answers to common questions about the vignette system in Germany and solutions to potential issues you may encounter while driving on German roads.

Unlike some neighboring countries, Germany does not use a vignette system for passenger cars. Instead, the German toll system applies only to heavy vehicles over 7.5 tons. For regular passenger vehicles, you can drive on German highways (Autobahns) and federal roads without purchasing a vignette.

Generally, there are no toll roads for passenger cars in Germany. The Autobahns and federal roads are unrestricted to use. However, there are a few exceptions:
  • The Herren Tunnel (near Lübeck)
  • The Warnow Tunnel (in Rostock)
These tunnels have specific toll charges for all vehicles, including cars.

While you don't need a vignette, there are other important requirements for driving in Germany:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Proof of insurance (Green Card recommended for non-EU residents)
  • Warning triangle and first-aid kit in the car
  • Appropriate seasonal tires (winter tires are mandatory in certain conditions)
Always follow German traffic rules and speed limits, which can vary on the Autobahn.

When renting a car in Germany, most requirements are typically handled by the rental company. However, you should:
  • Ensure you have a valid driver's license and any required international driving permit
  • Check that the rental agreement includes all necessary insurance
  • Familiarize yourself with the vehicle and any specific German road rules
  • Confirm the fuel type and return policy with the rental company
Remember, even in a rental car, you're responsible for following all German traffic laws.

If you experience issues while driving in Germany:
  • For emergencies, call 112 (general emergency) or 110 (police)
  • For breakdowns on the Autobahn, use the emergency phones located at regular intervals
  • If your vehicle breaks down, turn on hazard lights and place the warning triangle behind your car
  • For non-emergency assistance, contact your rental company or insurance provider
  • In case of an accident, always exchange insurance information and contact the police if there are injuries or significant damage
